Introduction

All dentists are trained to make dentures although many younger practitioners will have very limited experience before they qualify. Partly for this reason and partly because people are living longer, problems with dentures are becoming more common.

The type of work we do

Richard Crosby has undertaken a Masters Degree training programme in Prosthetic dentistry and now limits his practice to this area of care. Among the types of people he assists are:

 - People who have eating or speaking difficulties or where discomfort has been a repeated problem,

 - People who desire an excellent natural appearance for their complete or partial denture,

 - People whose natural teeth have become very worn or damaged,

 - People who have or need the assistance of implants to support and retain their dentures.

- People who have had surgery and need special types of dentures such as obturators.

In addition Richard has an interest in the construction of appliances to treat pain from the muscles and joint of the jaw, the Temperomandibular Joint or TMJ and appliances to assist with snoring and sleep apnoea.

The Process

The stages in making new dentures vary from case to case but after the initial consultation they usually involve:

1) accurate impressions of the teeth and gums

2) records of how the upper and lower jaws meet

3) a trial of the denture to allow for final adjustments

4) fitting of the completed denture followed by a check visit a few days later

Each stage may take more than one visit and if partial dentures are being made then adjustments to the remaining teeth are sometimes necessary. At the trial stage we usually give our patients a chance to take their new denture away to check that they are happy with the appearance before final processing.

Fees

How much will this type of treatment cost?

This does vary, however after an initial consultation and examination we will give you an individual written report and estimate of fees. As a guide we list below our average fees for some common treatments.

Initial Consultation £75

Partial Acrylic Denture £450

Partial Metal Denture £600

Complete Dentures £1100

Finally

Even the best dentures are poor substitutes for real teeth. For this reason if a new denture is to be a success a great deal of patience and co-operation is needed from both parties. With this understanding and a joint approach to the task in hand, remarkable and very pleasing results can be achieved.
